The Type Directors Club - Typography 30
15th February, 2010
For over fifty years, the Type Directors Club has encouraged the worldwide graphic arts community to achieve excellence in typography through its annual international competitions.
Typography 30 is the only annual devoted exclusively to typography and presents the finest work in this field for the year 2009. Selected from approximately 2300 international submissions to the annual Type Directors Club competition, the winning designs are models of excellence and innovation in the use of type design, encompassing a wide range of categories, including books, magazines, corporate identities, logo types, stationery, annual reports, video and web graphics, and posters.
This color Annual includes the winning selections from entries into the TDC55 Typography Competition, and the winning selections from entries into the TDC2 2009 Type Design Competition.
Typography 30 also includes a reprinting of the original catalog pages from the fifth TDC Competition from 1960. Reprinted here in the context of the Annual are many of the classic works of modernist typography from that time. Each year, the Type Directors Club selects a prominent design studio or designer for the latest Typography book, which showcases the winners of their annual typography competition. Tremendous creative freedom is given to each studio, which is why this annual book evolves and varies from year to year.
Typography 30 was designed by Werner Design Werks, Inc. in St. Paul, MN. Sharon Werner is the founder and principal of the two person studio. Her client list includes Target Corporation, Chronicle Books, MTV, Levi's, Mrs. Meyer's Clean Day and Mohawk Fine Papers. Werner Design Werks has been named Vendor of the Year by Target Corporation, and its work is part of the permanent collections of the Library of Congress, MusÉe de la Poste, the Victoria and Albert Museum, MusÉe des Arts Decoratifs, and the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum.
